Ask a Therapist about your child
Want to be able to message a therapist and get some guidance when you're stuck or unsure what to try next?
The Play Way's Ask a Therapist is now available.
Tell us what's going on, what you've already tried, and where you feel stuck. Our therapy team read, watch or listen to what you've described, consider what they would try next, why, and recommend any relevant resources from our Hub that might help, and reply to you within one business day.
Play Kits
A play kit is an all-in-one, play-based kit that our therapy team developed to support parents to work on a particular skill at home with their child. The tools, the teaching and the guidance all delivered to your door. Every play kit comes with videos and written guidance, so you are not handed a box of things and left to work out what to do with it. Nothing to source and nothing to print.
Each one is built for a stage rather than an age. A six-year-old who still holds a crayon in a whole fist and a nine-year-old who cannot finish anything they start both need help with their hands, and an age would put them in the same box. Where there are three kits for one skill they are a series, and each one picks up where the last finished. Fine motor, handwriting and language development all work that way, so you start where your child is now and move up when they are ready.
Between them the kits cover handwriting, talking, feelings and finding calm, moving a whole body, and the everyday jobs that come apart most often: sleep, routines, self-care, mealtimes and the lunch box. There are kits for starting school, for the school holidays and for creativity, and one for the adult doing the caring.
The advice we give on all of them is the same. Choose by what is actually challenging your child rather than by how old they are.
Frequently asked questions
What is a play kit?
A play kit is built around one skill, with the tools and the teaching delivered to your door. Our therapy team chooses, and often creates, what goes in, and the videos and the written guidance walk you and your child through how to use it. It is a single purchase rather than something that arrives every month.
Is a play kit occupational therapy?
No. Our occupational therapists and speech therapists choose what goes in the kits and write the teaching that comes with them, so you are getting their thinking and approach in a box. You are not getting therapy, and a kit does not do the job of a therapist seeing your child. If your child needs that, they still need it, and a kit is not a substitute for it. What a kit is for is the time in between, when you are on a waiting list or between appointments, or if your child needs some extra practice at something, and you want to do that, through play, at home, together.
How do I choose which play kit?
By what is actually challenging your child rather than by how old they are. Developmental stages do not line up with birthdays. Each Play Kit product listing is written to describe a child you could recognise, so the choice usually makes itself. Where a kit is one of a series of three, the page says which number it is and what comes before it. And if you’re not sure, just drop us an email and we’d love to help you at ask@theplayway.com
Are these like Lovevery?
They are both boxes of play, and they are built on a different idea. Lovevery sends a new box every month or two, matched to how old a baby or toddler is, and the next box arrives on a subscription basis. Ours is one box built around one skill, bought once, and then when another skill becomes relevant to your child's developmental journey, you can order a different Play Kit for that.
Our therapists pick every item and develop the video teaching and parent guides that comes with it, to support children who are finding something hard rather than for a developmental stage on a chart.
There is nothing monthly here and nothing to cancel. If you want a new box arriving every month for a baby, that is not what we do.
What is actually in the box?
Real tools to provide play-based skill building and learning, plus the guidance that tells you what to do with them. The contents are different in every kit and each page lists them, but the shape is the same: several play-tools chosen so a child can explore and try things, videos to follow, and written guidance for you. It’s all delivered to your door, no subscription, and you get the play and the understanding of what’s going on for your child, and how to support them at home.
