Creative Storytelling Set

Creative Storytelling Set

A workbook, a journal, a notebook and a deck of imagination cards. The workbook takes a story apart and works on one piece at a time, so your child builds it up rather than having to hold all of it at once, and then the journal and the blank notebook let the scaffolding drop away. Your child can write their story, draw it, act it out or turn it into a comic, so a blank page no longer stops them from starting.
Gnomes at Night

Gnomes at Night

A maze game where the two players sit either side of the board. We love this one because you cannot see your child's side and they cannot see yours, so you are both stuck with the same problem. The gnomes only move if somebody can say where the wall is and where the treasure is, so listening and asking again when you did not catch it is how the game gets won rather than something you are told to do.
Link It Up

Link It Up

A fast card game about what two pictures have in common. Both animals. Both cold. Both things that fly. Our speech pathologists use word association games for word finding, because hunting for the connection is the same hunt your child is on when a word will not come to them.
Make 'n' Break

Make 'n' Break

A block building game, with our own instructions in the box that turn it into a barrier game. One player describes the structure on the card, the other builds it without ever seeing it, then you lift the barrier and compare. Where the two do not match is exactly where a word went missing, and your child gets to see that for themselves. Great for ‘ah-ha’ moments.
Conversation Cards

Conversation Cards

Cards of questions worth answering. What is something you would like to be better at. Who is the kindest person you know. Use them one to one to practise taking turns, or around a table where more than one answer can be right and the focus is just natural conversation and sharing.

The barrier does the work

In two of these games the other player cannot see what your child can see. Your child works out inside the game that saying it clearly is what gets them the thing they want. Many children take that in far better when they have found it themselves, rather than being given feedback from others.
A story comes apart into pieces

A story comes apart into pieces

Where it happens, who it is about, what goes wrong, how that felt, what they did and how it ends. It breaks storytelling apart into manageable pieces and uses familiar stories from books and films they already know and love to show them how each element works in context. Then, once they understand how all the pieces fit together, they're ready for the "big job" of telling or writing a whole story themselves.

You are the other player

Most of these need two people, so the practice happens inside a game, through play. There is no worksheet and there is nothing that gets marked, and your child gets to beat you at something.

The videos that come with it

Everything in the kit is ready to use from the day it arrives, so your child can be setting up a game as soon as it is open. When you want the learning behind it, there is just over three hours of video across forty five short sessions. Every game is walked through; how to sit next to a child who is stuck without playing their turn for them, and how to support the same skills in their normal everyday. About three quarters of an hour of it is spoken to your child rather than to you, taking them page by page through the storytelling workbook and journal. We'll send your invitation to access it all when your kit ships.

Who made this

Kait is an OT. She has been working with children and families for nearly 20 years, and she has four kids of her own. She built this play kit with our team of speech pathologists because many children have trouble finding their words (even though they know them), holding a conversation with others, or putting instructions in an order that can be followed. Not only does this make social situations challenging but school asks them to use all three of these skills while also learning new words on top. The games in this kit were curated by our therapy team so that the talking is the game. Your child is trying to win, and the describing, the listening and the asking again are how that gets done.
