Supporting children to find the right word, hold a conversation and tell a story somebody else can follow, with six tools that make these skills something we develop through play, not assume they simply come naturally to all children.

This play kit was curated by our speech pathologists for the child who talks plenty and still cannot get the message across. Your child is learning new words at school every week, but putting them together and using them to communicate effectively, that’s a whole other thing. These games give them somewhere to practise these skills and have fun doing it.

This is the third in our series of language play kits, developed for children approx 7-10 years old. Start here if your child needs a hand with the communication skills they need to thrive in social situations and learning environments.

The Language and Conversation Play Kit, previously named the Language Promotion Program, is a children's expressive language and social communication kit put together by paediatric speech pathologists in Australia, for children building vocabulary, word retrieval, sentence structure, narrative storytelling, active listening, turn taking and self expression.

It includes six tools: the Creative Storytelling Set with a workbook, journal, notebook and imagination cards, the Gnomes at Night cooperative maze game, the Link it Up word association card game, Ravensburger Make 'n' Break with our own barrier game instructions, conversation cards, and a parent guide. Ways to play booklets come with the storytelling set, Gnomes at Night, Link it Up, Make 'n' Break and the conversation cards.

Every kit also comes with supporting video in The Play Way Hub, included: forty five short sessions covering every game in the box, how barrier games build comprehension and spoken communication, the seven story elements of a narrative, and strategies for supporting language difficulties at school such as extra processing time, simplified instructions, visual aids and movement breaks. Narrative storytelling is tied to the Australian curriculum right through the primary years. Most families using this kit have a child somewhere between 7 and 10. That is a guide rather than a rule. Children build these skills at their own pace, so choose by what is getting in the way rather than by a birthday.

Which of the three language play kits to choose: Early Years Language is for the child who is trying to tell you something and has no words for it yet. Sounds and Rhymes is for the child who talks easily and is about to meet reading and writing. Language and Conversation is for the older child who talks plenty but loses the thread of a conversation or a story.

Creative Storytelling Set

A workbook, a journal, a notebook and a deck of imagination cards. The workbook takes a story apart and works on one piece at a time, so your child builds it up rather than having to hold all of it at once, and then the journal and the blank notebook let the scaffolding drop away. Your child can write their story, draw it, act it out or turn it into a comic, so a blank page no longer stops them from starting.

Gnomes at Night

A maze game where the two players sit either side of the board. We love this one because you cannot see your child's side and they cannot see yours, so you are both stuck with the same problem. The gnomes only move if somebody can say where the wall is and where the treasure is, so listening and asking again when you did not catch it is how the game gets won rather than something you are told to do.

Link It Up

A fast card game about what two pictures have in common. Both animals. Both cold. Both things that fly. Our speech pathologists use word association games for word finding, because hunting for the connection is the same hunt your child is on when a word will not come to them.

Make 'n' Break

A block building game, with our own instructions in the box that turn it into a barrier game. One player describes the structure on the card, the other builds it without ever seeing it, then you lift the barrier and compare. Where the two do not match is exactly where a word went missing, and your child gets to see that for themselves. Great for ‘ah-ha’ moments.

Conversation Cards

Cards of questions worth answering. What is something you would like to be better at. Who is the kindest person you know. Use them one to one to practise taking turns, or around a table where more than one answer can be right and the focus is just natural conversation and sharing.

Parent Guide

A short guide for you (the adult), covering what each game is working on, how to sit next to a child who is stuck without taking their turn for them, and what to do on the day a game goes a bit sideways.

Why we built it this way

The barrier does the work

In two of these games the other player cannot see what your child can see. Your child works out inside the game that saying it clearly is what gets them the thing they want. Many children take that in far better when they have found it themselves, rather than being given feedback from others.

A story comes apart into pieces

Where it happens, who it is about, what goes wrong, how that felt, what they did and how it ends. It breaks storytelling apart into manageable pieces and uses familiar stories from books and films they already know and love to show them how each element works in context. Then, once they understand how all the pieces fit together, they're ready for the "big job" of telling or writing a whole story themselves.

You are the other player

Most of these need two people, so the practice happens inside a game, through play. There is no worksheet and there is nothing that gets marked, and your child gets to beat you at something.

The videos that come with it

Everything in the kit is ready to use from the day it arrives, so your child can be setting up a game as soon as it is open. When you want the learning behind it, there is just over three hours of video across forty five short sessions. Every game is walked through; how to sit next to a child who is stuck without playing their turn for them, and how to support the same skills in their normal everyday. About three quarters of an hour of it is spoken to your child rather than to you, taking them page by page through the storytelling workbook and journal. Who made this

Kait is an OT. She has been working with children and families for nearly 20 years, and she has four kids of her own. She built this play kit with our team of speech pathologists because many children have trouble finding their words (even though they know them), holding a conversation with others, or putting instructions in an order that can be followed. Not only does this make social situations challenging but school asks them to use all three of these skills while also learning new words on top. The games in this kit were curated by our therapy team so that the talking is the game. Your child is trying to win, and the describing, the listening and the asking again are how that gets done.
