This toolbox pairs with the Routines Program in the Hub and gives children aged 4+ something they can see, touch and own. The Routines Buddy magnetic whiteboard and timer, weekly and monthly planners, routines workbook and stickers work together as a visual system that makes "what comes next" clear and predictable, so kids can start moving through their day with less prompting and more genuine independence. The bonus video content from our therapy team ties it all together with guidance grounded in neuroscience and sensory strategies.

The Routines Play Kit, previously named the Routines Program, is a visual routine kit for children put together by paediatric occupational therapists in Australia, for children who need a morning, afternoon and evening they can see, follow and change themselves.

The box holds the Routines Buddy magnetic planner set, which is a double sided magnetic whiteboard on a stand, a timer, picture magnets in their own bags, whiteboard markers, and a booklet on using them. It also holds a magnetic weekly planner and a magnetic monthly planner that take the same magnets, and the Routines Journal, a printed workbook the child fills in first.

The kit is worked through in one order. The child works through six things that hold a day up, movement, real food, time in nature, love and connection, quality sleep and free play, trying each one and rating how it left their energy: high, low or just right. They also work through their own sensory likes and dislikes. Only then do they separate the activities they need to do from the ones they want to do, place both on the board, write the times in and try it for a week before changing it.

Every kit also comes with supporting video in The Play Way Hub, included, just under four hours of it. That covers the journal section by section, laying a routine out on the magnetic board, and a longer session for the adult on why routines help and how to build them at home. Eleven of those videos, about forty minutes, cover setting up an Amazon Alexa to give spoken morning prompts. An Alexa is not included in the kit and nothing in the kit requires one.

Most families using this kit have a child somewhere between 4 and 12, the stretch where a child moves from following a routine an adult sets to running one of their own. That is a guide rather than a rule, so choose by what is getting in the way now rather than by a birthday.

Routines Buddy

A freestanding magnetic whiteboard complete with visual routine magnets, a countdown timer, dry-erase markers, and a handy setup guide. Your child maps out their morning on the front and flips it over to plan their afternoon and evening on the back. We love that it is completely erasable; if a morning doesn't go to plan, your child has the autonomy to wipe it clean and adjust it themselves.

Weekly and monthly planners

Two matching magnetic calendar boards (one weekly, one monthly). Because no two afternoons are identical, these planners help your child map out the bigger picture, like footy practice on Tuesday or swimming on Thursday. When kids can visually preview their week, they transition into their afternoons with a feeling of stability.

Routines Journal

A hands-on workbook your child is guided through via the videos. The journal guides your child to experiment with each of the six healthy habits, helping them discover their own personal preferences. By learning to incorporate what truly makes them feel good into their daily schedule, your child takes active ownership of their day. It transforms a rigid checklist into a flexible, living routine that adapts alongside them.

The magic of seeing time

Many morning meltdowns are caused by time, not a lack of effort. By writing time slots next to their magnets, your child will figure out if their morning is actually long enough for the routine they’ve designed. Pair that with their visual countdown timer, and they can literally "see" time passing. If their plan doesn’t fit the clock, they get the autonomy to decide: do they swap an activity, or wake up ten minutes earlier? Learning to estimate time is an executive function skill and it’s the secret to getting them out the door without you saying a word.

Building in regulation

A typical morning is packed with non-negotiable tasks that kids dread which is exactly how parents end up repeating "put your shoes on" five times. This kit teaches your child to build a regulation into their routine (like five minutes on the trampoline before brushing teeth). When a child starts their day with what feels good, they have the fuel needed to tackle the rest of their list.

Who made this

Kait is an OT. She has been working with children and families for nearly 20 years, and she has four kids of her own. She designed this play kit because she knows firsthand how high-stress, rushed mornings and never-ending evenings take a toll on the entire family. As well-meaning parents, we often get caught in a cycle of constant reminders and micromanagement. This kit breaks that cycle by shifting the ownership.
