This play kit was curated by our therapy team for the times of year when the routine a lot of children rely on disappears - the holidays. The journal helps put some structure to the month, the week and the day so they can feel like they have something that holds them steady. The sprinkler, ice and reusable water balloons get them outside and moving. And the camera, craft kit and games give them something to get absorbed in creatively.

Ice cube tray and food colouring

Something cold to hold or to crunch helps settle a lot of children. A six-well tray, four natural food colours and sticks for icy poles. Freeze the colours and your child can paint the concrete with them, or grab an icy pole when they’re transitioning to something challenging, to help bring calm through their senses.
Reusable water balloons

Reusable water balloons

Reusable, so no scraps to pick up off the grass afterwards, and they fill from the hose over and over. If you freeze them they have another use: smashing one on the ground can be a good way for a child to release anger or frustration without harming anyone.
Beach bat and ball set

Beach bat and ball set

Two soft bats and two balls, light enough that a rally can happen indoors or outdoors. Your child can play alone or with others as they practise tracking something that’s moving and getting to the right place in time.

The camera gives them a reason to get moving, get creative and do things that are worth capturing on film. It provides motivation to plan and do something fun and active, and then to take those memories through to their journal.

Turning chaos into steadiness

School routines give a child a timetable they can rely on, and the long break can feel unstable and chaotic compared to that. Our journal guides them to build that rhythm into the holidays with a structure to support them. Knowing what is coming lets many children settle into the days instead of feeling out of control, or lost, inside them.

We curated the kit to multiply the play value of the tools through the endless ‘ways to play’. 8 creative projects, 5 weeks of journalling, 15 sprinkler games, 15 balloon games, 15 bat and ball games. Each tool in the kit can be played alone or with others. This kit is built to keep giving all summer long.

The skill building is underneath the fun

Your child sees a sprinkler, a camera, a bag of water balloons and an ice cube tray, and that is what they are. Underneath, they are huffing and puffing without noticing it, using something cold to settle themselves, and building their fine motor skills as they create a wind chime.

The videos that come with it

Everything in the kit is ready to use from the day it arrives, so the sprinkler goes up on the lawn and the water balloons can get filled from the hose straight away. There is just under two hours of supporting video in total. Some of it is for you (the adult), covering why each thing is in the box and how to use it in their normal everyday. The rest are for your child, going through the kit item by item and then the journal page by page. The games are filmed with children playing them, none longer than a minute and a half, so a game gets watched once for inspiration and then they run outside and play. We'll send your invitation to access it all when your kit ships.

  • They need a plan for the week so they know what’s coming, and on the days I don’t have one, things go badly.
  • I want their screen time to be inspiring and initiating real life play and creativity, not sucking them into the algorithm vortex.

Who made this

Kait is an OT. She has been working with children and families for nearly 20 years, and she has four kids of her own. For many kids, the holidays are when things really fall apart. The routine stops, the excitement is overwhelming, everyone is around all the time, and for a lot of families that turns into the hardest few weeks of the year. This play kit was built for exactly this, to bring play and stability to the summer holidays. The kit is old school fun on purpose: the simple play that got a generation outside, puffing, and playing in the yard. Our therapy team put it together that way because a lot of that play has gone, and because the value is in the play itself. We’ve pulled the tools and the videos together so that this is plug and play for families who want something easy, fun and value packed for their child to engage in this summer.
