A 3D printing pen that draws in three dimensions. For kids aged 5+ who won't go near anything that looks like handwriting practice, this is the entry point.

This toolbox pairs with the STEM: 3D Printing Pen Program in the Hub and gives children everything they need to go from complete beginner to building actual moving creatures. The 3D pen, running animals kit, walking robots kit, extra filament, stencils and how-to guide have all been chosen by our therapy team to build hand strength, grip, dexterity, planning and problem solving through projects that are genuinely impressive to complete.

The process of troubleshooting when something doesn't go right the first time is also part of the therapeutic value. Kids who tend to give up the moment something gets hard will find themselves sticking with this one, because the outcome is too good to abandon.

Suitable for ages 5+. Adult supervision recommended when using the pen.

WHAT'S INSIDE

What's in this play kit

A full kit of 3D pen tools, curated to work together.
3D Printing Pen Kit

3D Printing Pen Kit

The pen itself, a charging cord, coils of filament and three practice stencils: a butterfly, a flower and a windmill. The intuitive loading, unloading, and speed control buttons let your child easily slow down the filament feed to match their own hand speed and comfort level.
Running Animals Kit

Running Animals Kit

Stencils, filament and a small motor, enough for ten running animals. Every piece is flat, so your child gets ten goes at tracing, peeling and gluing before moving onto the 3D version of walking robots.
Walking Robots Kit

Walking Robots Kit

Stencils, filament and a small motor for five walking robots. These robots stands up, so your child is joining flat pieces into something with a front, a back and two sides. A 3D moving toy built by them!
Extra Filament

Extra Filament

A bag of spare coils in more colours. Every colour change pushes the last colour out first, so filament goes faster than you would expect. We love the spare bag, because a child who can see the filament running low will often start rationing their practice instead of using it.
‘How To’ Guide

‘How To’ Guide

Our own printed guide to the process itself. Your child traces a shape, waits until it lifts off the sheet on its own, lays the pieces out, then glues them with the pen, and works down the same run whichever build they are on.
Parent Guide

Parent Guide

A short guide for you (the adult), covering how you use this play kit at home.

Why we built it this way

They’re building something

They’re building something

When a child is asked to practise their skills just for the sake of practice, the motivation to push through challenges or problem solve just isn’t there. With so many different builds in this kit they will want to see and play with the end result of their efforts.
They follow along without you

They follow along without you

Our team created written and video guides from start to finish of every single build in this kit so your child can follow along independently stopping, starting, rewinding and going at the pace that suits them.
They turn the speed up

They turn the speed up

The pen feeds filament out at three speeds and there is a button on it to change them. Slow while a line is still wobbly, faster once it is not. Your child presses that button, not you, so the moment the work gets harder is one they pick.

INCLUDED WITH YOUR PLAY KIT

The videos that come with it

There is just over three hours of video for this kit. Most of that is walking your child, step-by-step, through all of the builds. They see every step of every build in action so they can copy and feel confident that they’re ‘doing it right’. There are also a few to help you get everything setup and some tips for success. We'll send your invitation to access it all when your kit ships.

WHO THIS PLAY KIT IS FOR

If writing practice looks like this

  • Anything that looks like writing practice and they are gone before I finish the sentence.
  • They give up so quickly when they practise writing because they’re just not invested in the outcome it produces. I need something where they have to keep coming back to it to experience the final result of their hard work.
  • The only thing they will sit still for has a screen in it. I’m happy to follow their tech interests but I want them to be actively creating with it.
If any of that sounds like your house, this is who we built the play kit for.

Who made this

Kait is an OT. She has been working with children and families for nearly 20 years, and she has four kids of her own. Because the liquid filament sets in just under a minute, your child’s creation instantly transforms into a physical, tangible object they can lift off the page and hold. By using the pen to fuse these pieces together, your child experiences the thrill of watching a toy they built with their own hands walk right across the table. The 'How-To' Guide, the Parent Guide, and every chapter of the video library were all created by our therapy team. And our 13 build videos help your child to visually watch and mirror the entire process from beginning to end which completely eliminates the frustration of decoding complex written manuals.
