Support your child to plan and pack their own lunch box, with seven tools that bring a supported approach to independence, from writing the week down on the fridge to getting the lids off on their own at school.

Planning their week, writing their list, and organising their things as part of a daily routine are all skills the lunch box can help build. Our nutritionists curated this play kit alongside our therapy team, so the food knowledge and the functional tools are all integrated together here. The bento set, the food jar and the planners are all developed by our team and they are built to match each other, so the squares your child writes in on the planner are the sections they pack their lunch into with the bento box. This play kit is for children who are ready for some independence and you want the tools and videos to walk them through each step of building that.

WHAT'S INSIDE

What's in this play kit

A full kit of play-tools, curated to work together.
Lunch Buddy Bento Set

Lunch Buddy Bento Set

A stainless steel lunch box with five compartments and a silicone lid, plus a small and a medium dipper container. The Lunch Box Planner magnet matches the layout of the bento box so that what they plan aligns with what they pack into their box. Plus, it’s dishwasher safe.
Lunch Buddy Insulated Container Set

Lunch Buddy Insulated Container Set

A stainless steel food jar with a leak-proof lid, a silicone grip and its own spoon, so last night's dinner goes in as tomorrow's lunch. The videos cover using leftovers, because a warm lunch your child already likes is an easy choice, and it gets them planning a day ahead. Dishwasher safe.
Lunch Buddy sandwich cutters

Lunch Buddy sandwich cutters

Press-down cutters that make shapes on a sandwich, including a dolphin and a butterfly. We love them for the push, because it takes two hands and some strength. Plus they add a bit of fun to the daily lunch routine.
Lunch Buddy planning tools

Lunch Buddy planning tools

A Lunch Box Foods magnet, a Lunch Box Planner magnet and a magnetic shopping list. Then a Lunch Box Weekly Planner, and the lunch box notes you write and hide in the box after they’ve made it to add a little sprinkle of joy when they open it later. The foods magnet has a row for the foods your child is happy to pack and a row for the ones they are still learning, so it is their list, and they can add to it.
Lunch Box Recipe Booklet

Lunch Box Recipe Booklet

Their own booklet, sorted by how much work each recipe is: no preparation for a school morning, low preparation, and more preparation for a Sunday afternoon. Fruit salad and Weet-Bix slice are both in there, laid out as ingredients, equipment and steps your child can follow.
Lunch Box Game

Lunch Box Game

A memory game for two to four players. Each player takes a lunch box board printed with six foods, and turns cards over to find them. We love that the whole game is filling a lunch box, and that it takes more than one person to do it.
Parent Guide

Parent Guide

A short guide for you (the adult), covering what each of the tools in the play kit does, and how to get the best out of them.

Why we built it this way

Routine and repetition

Routine and repetition

Your child writes their foods on the magnet, fills the weekly planner from that list, puts whatever has run out on the shopping list, and then brings it all together each day. These skills are huge for building confidence and independence as they grow.
They pick what goes in

They pick what goes in

The two rows on the foods magnet are your child's choice: the foods they are happy to pack, and the ones they are still learning. The videos help them make considered choices and understand how to balance their lunch box to feel their best.
The thinking happens on the weekend

The thinking happens on the weekend

Our nutritionists say children tend to do best in the kitchen when it feels fun and relaxed, so the deciding and the cooking is planned for the calmest part of the week. By the school morning the choices are already on the planner, and your child just does the packing.

INCLUDED WITH YOUR PLAY KIT

The videos that come with it

Everything in the kit is ready to use from the day it arrives, so your child can be packing their lunch with their new tools right away. When they are ready to start the learning, there is just over two and a half hours of video delivered as six projects. Four of them follow the lunch box through the school day, fruit break, recess, lunch and afternoon tea, with recipes for each sorted by how much preparation they take. The last two cover planning a week and packing across the five food groups. Our nutritionists explain the food, and show them where it fits in their normal everyday. Some of the videos are led by children rather than by an adult, so your child watches somebody their own size work the lids and the containers before trying it themselves. We'll send your invitation to access it all when your kit ships.

WHO THIS PLAY KIT IS FOR

If the lunch box is still your job

  • I decide what goes in the lunch box every day, and I am fresh out of ideas.
  • They have plenty of opinions about what they want in there, and not one of them turns into a packed lunch without me doing all the work.
  • Half of what I pack is still in the box at the end of the day, and I just want them to start taking ownership of what they put in there so it gets eaten.
If any of that sounds like your family, this is who we built the play kit for.

Who made this

Kait is an OT. She has been working with children and families for nearly 20 years, and she has four kids of her own. The lunch box is something that is part of nearly every child’s daily routine. And it’s one of the greatest opportunities for building a wide variety of skills that carry over into all areas of life. Our therapy team curated this box with our nutritionists, and the collaboration has brought such a practical and engaging approach to a ‘boring everyday chore’.
