Support the steady fingers your child needs for buttons, zips and shoelaces, with five projects that ask them to pinch, peel and place something exactly where they meant it to go.

This play kit was curated by our therapy team for the child whose hands are ready to be asked for something smaller and more exact. Peeling a sticker, twisting off a lid, pouring coloured sand into a narrow neck, all of it takes the same pinch they will use to hold a pencil, and the projects provide play-based opportunities for them to repeatedly practise this. It is the second of our three fine motor play kits. Choose between them by where your child's hands are up to rather than by how old they are, and start here if they can already hold a pencil and draw, but buttons, zips and anything small and fiddly still defeat them.

WHAT'S INSIDE

What's in this play kit

A full kit of play-tools, curated to work together.
Dream Sand Art kit

Dream Sand Art kit

Eight colours of sand, two glitter bottles, a tool set, a tray and sixteen pages to make. The first move on every page is lifting the corner of a sticker with a little stick tool, which is the exact pinch used to hold a pencil, and your child repeats it all afternoon without once being asked to. There are bottles too, for pouring layered sand into something they can keep on a shelf.
Reusable sticker pad

Reusable sticker pad

Scenes to build and then take apart again, so the same set gets used dozens of times instead of once. Peeling and placing a sticker is a pinch and an aim in the same movement, and because these lift off, a child who puts one in the wrong spot can move it rather than starting the page again.
Flash stickers

Flash stickers

Foil stickers laid down with a wooden tool rather than fingers, which asks for a steadier hand and a closer look. We love these for the finish, because the result looks far more impressive than the effort it took, and that is exactly what a child who has decided they are no good at craft needs to see.
Mosaic painting

Mosaic painting

Hundreds of small pieces placed one at a time inside a printed design. It is the longest and quietest project in the box, and staying with something that long is its own skill, which is what makes a full page of writing possible in future.
Air drying clay and liquid chalk markers

Air drying clay and liquid chalk markers

Clay to sculpt and leave to dry, then markers to decorate it once it has. Squeezing and pinching clay builds hand strength against something that provides resistance, and they’ll have something to keep and be proud of at the end of it.
Parent Guide

Parent Guide

A short guide for you (the adult), covering what each project is working on, how to make one easier if it is not going well, and what else to do with the materials once the project is finished.

Why we built it this way

Something to hold in every project

Something to hold in every project

Nearly everything here comes with something to hold: a stick tool for the sand art, a wooden applicator for the foil stickers, markers for the clay. Each activity gets their hand to hold differently, so they can build strength at different levels and build confidence in a variety of areas.
Steady comes from doing it forty times

Steady comes from doing it forty times

Peeling one sticker is nothing. Peeling forty is what builds the pinch we’re looking for. These projects repeat one small accurate movement so many times that steady fingers build naturally, and your child never has to be told formally that they are practising.
It looks like creative play

It looks like creative play

Nothing in this box looks like an exercise or a worksheet. Your child sees sand art and stickers and picks it up because they want to, which means you are not the one having to keep them going. They simply want to.

INCLUDED WITH YOUR PLAY KIT

The videos that come with it

Everything in the kit is ready to use from the day it arrives, so your child can get stuck into the first project without waiting for anything. When you want the learning behind it, there is about half an hour of video covering which hand skill each project is working on and how to support that development in their normal everyday. Our OTs walk you through each of the five projects in the videos, showing ways to make it easier or harder and ideas for what else to do with the materials once the project is finished. We'll send your invitation to access it all when your kit ships.

WHO THIS PLAY KIT IS FOR

If the fiddly things look like this

  • They can draw, but buttons and zips are still a real battle.
  • They give up the second something needs steady fingers.
  • I want them to be ready for school and all the little things they’re going to need a strong pinch grip for.
If any of that sounds like your family, this is who we built the play kit for.

Who made this

Kait is an OT. She has been working with children and families for nearly 20 years, and she has four kids of her own. She built this play kit for the gap in the middle. A child who can already draw but cannot yet manage buttons, zips or anything needing a careful pinch often gets left doing activities that are easier than they need, because the usual next step up is a ‘boring’ worksheet. The five projects were curated by our therapy team so one small accurate movement gets repeated dozens of times inside something they enjoy making. The pinch and the twist happen inside the creative activities rather than as formal skill practice, so your child is motivated to engage.
