Before a child can write their name, hold scissors, or do up their buttons, they need the hand strength, coordination and confidence that comes from using their hands in purposeful, playful ways. If your child avoids drawing, struggles with craft, or gets frustrated quickly at tabletop tasks, the foundations are what need attention first.

This toolbox pairs with the Fine Motor Foundations Program in the Hub and gives you five sensory-rich projects to work through together: colouring with beeswax crayons, dot painting, modelling dough, finger painting with ink, and finger painting with paint and stencils. Beeswax crayons and colouring book, modelling dough, dot painting kit, finger painting kit with stamps, paint and palette, ink stamp and giant fingerpaint paper are all included, along with instructional cards and video training from our therapy team to guide you through each one.

The activities build hand strength, grip, hand-eye coordination and early pre-writing skills through creative projects rather than drills. Children finish each session with something they actually made, which builds the kind of confidence that makes them want to come back.

What the program covers

Through the Fine Motor Foundations Program, children will access a toolbox of resources that has been curated with the goal of fostering beginning fine motor skills.

The resources provide five foundational fine motor projects, including colouring using beeswax crayons, dot painting, manipulating modelling dough, finger painting with ink and finger painting with paint and stencils.

Online videos contain tips and tricks for implementing the projects at home and show the resources in use. Instructional cards containing ideas for ways to play with the resources, plus additional ideas for developing fine motor skills using existing items from home.

As children engage with these resources, they will explore sensory-rich materials, practise basic pre-writing skills and engage in creative projects that are aimed at stimulating their fine motor development.
