Welcome to tummy time, one of the simplest and most powerful ways to support your baby’s development in the early years. If you're just starting out or if your baby hasn’t quite warmed up to being on their tummy yet, don’t worry. You’re not alone, and we’re here to help make tummy time easier, more joyful, and something both you and your baby can genuinely look forward to.
What is tummy time and why does it matter?
Tummy time is just what it sounds like, time spent with your baby on their tummy while they’re awake and supervised. It’s a small change in positioning, but it can make a big difference. This simple activity helps strengthen the muscles in your baby’s neck, shoulders, arms and back. These are the muscles they’ll need to roll, sit, crawl and eventually, walk.
But it’s not just about movement. Tummy time is also an opportunity for your baby to explore their world from a different angle, take in new sights and sounds and connect with you through play.
Getting started: the small things make a big difference
You don’t need fancy gear or a huge block of free time to get going. A soft mat, a quiet moment after a nap, and your loving presence are more than enough. You can begin with just 1–2 minutes at a time, a few times a day. That’s it! Over time, you’ll see your baby build strength, endurance and even start to enjoy it.
You might notice that your baby isn’t too thrilled at first. That’s okay and totally normal. Tummy time is a brand new experience. Think of it like going to the gym for the first time: it takes some getting used to. But with the right support, your baby can grow to love it.
What are the benefits of tummy time?
Tummy time supports your baby’s growth in five key areas:
1. Physical development
It helps strengthen the neck, shoulders and arms, and promotes healthy head shape. You might even spot your baby watching their own hands or starting to push up to look around!
2. Sensory development
Your baby experiences new textures and begins building body awareness. That little shift in perspective helps them understand where their body is in space.
3. Cognitive development
Looking around during tummy time sparks curiosity. It’s one of the first ways your baby starts problem-solving: reaching, shifting and working out how the world works.
4. Language development
Tummy time is a chance to talk, sing and share books face to face. Every time you describe what your baby sees or sing a nursery rhyme, you're building a foundation for language.
5. Social and emotional development
Snuggling chest to chest, playing peekaboo or singing together on the floor are all beautiful bonding moments that nurture trust and connection.
How to make tummy time more enjoyable
If your baby is not loving tummy time right now, that’s okay. Some babies need a little more encouragement, and a bit of creativity. Here are a few ideas to try:
Use your body
Place your baby on your chest as you lie back. They’ll lift their head to see your face, which is their favourite thing in the world. Or try a tummy-down carry, sometimes called the “tiger in the tree,’ to gently support them in a new way.
Try different surfaces
A rolled-up towel under the chest can make lifting the head easier. An exercise ball or your legs offer gentle movement that can make the experience more enjoyable.
Bring the fun
Add books, soft toys, mirrors or bubbles. Play peekaboo. Sing a song. Make tummy time playful and social, something you do together.
Go outside
Fresh air, a new view, and natural textures like grass under a blanket can create a magical tummy time session.
Creating a routine that works for you
Tummy time doesn’t need to be rigid. It can happen in small pockets throughout the day. after a nappy change, when your baby wakes from a nap, or while you’re relaxing on the floor together.
You might start with a few minutes at a time, a few times a day. As your baby grows stronger, they’ll be able to stay on their tummy longer and even begin to play independently.
What if my baby still doesn’t like it?
Sometimes, despite our best efforts, babies protest. That’s okay. You know your baby best. If they’re not enjoying tummy time right now, take a break and come back to it later in a different way. Try new positions. Offer comfort. Follow their lead.
And remember: you’re doing a wonderful job. Even short bursts of tummy time count. Celebrate those little wins: one lifted head, one new expression, one giggle at your peekaboo face.
A few important safety reminders
-
Always supervise your baby during tummy time.
-
Make sure your baby is awake and alert.
-
Wait at least 30 minutes after a feed to avoid discomfort or spit-up.
-
Always place your baby on their back to sleep, as per safe sleep guidelines.
Where to next?
As you continue to explore tummy time, notice what makes your baby light up. Is it a certain song? A favourite toy? The way you smile at them from the mat? These are your cues for what matters most, connection, curiosity and shared joy.
You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to be present.
Tummy time is not just about physical development. It’s about building moments of play, discovery and love. We hope this information helps you see tummy time not as a task on the to-do list, but as an invitation to connect with your baby in the most delightful way.
